A sparkling, well-maintained grill not only cooks more efficiently but also lasts longer and enhances the appearance of your garden. Whether you’re using a custom-built Santa Maria parrilla (ByGonzo) or a reliable kettle grill, these professional tips will help keep your grill in top condition, season after season.
1. Pre-Heat & Brush After Every Cook
- Why it matters: Cleaning hot grates helps to loosen stuck-on food particles before they harden.
- How to do it: Preheat your grill on high for 10 minutes. Then, use a stainless steel or brass wire brush or a grill-safe scraper to clean the grates.
2. Deep Clean Grates with Onion or Salt
- Onion hack: While the grates are hot, rub a halved onion, cut side down, across each bar. The natural moisture and acidity help lift grease, plus you’ll get a hint of flavour.
- Salt trick: For stubborn buildup, sprinkle coarse salt on a damp brush and scrub the bars. The salt acts as an abrasive, effectively removing carbon without the use of chemicals.
3. Remove & Soak for a Monthly Spa Day
- Frequency: Once a month (or more often if you grill often).
- Steps:
- Remove grates, heat plates, and drip pans.
- Soak them in a mix of hot water, dish soap, and a splash of white vinegar for 30–60 minutes.
- Remove any loosened grime, rinse thoroughly, and air-dry before reassembling. Our grills are designed for easy removal of each grill and the hot plate.
4. Tackle the Interior with a Vacuum & Degreaser
- Vacuum ash: For charcoal grills and smokers, once the fire is completely cold, vacuum out ash and small charcoal bits to prevent airflow blockages.
- Degrease the firebox: Spray a grill-safe degreaser on the interior walls, let sit, then wipe away built-up soot and grease. Rinse gently with a damp cloth.
5. Protect Metal with High-Temp Paint or Oil
- Rust prevention: Lightly coat cast-iron grates with cooking oil after each cleaning to ward off rust.
- Before delivery day, we paint the outside of our grills with heat-resistant paint; we do not paint the actual grill where you cook.
6. Inspect Welds & Moving Parts — Quarterly
- What to look at: every visible weld seam, the height-adjustment gear/chain, hinge pins, and wheels.
- Why it matters: Our grills are fully welded. A quick visual check keeps your parrilla rock-solid and silky-smooth for years.
7. Cover Up & Store Smart
- Use a grill cover: Invest in a heavy-duty, weather-resistant cover to shield against rain, UV rays, and dust.
- Off-season storage: If possible, move your grill indoors or to a covered shed over winter. For oversized Santa Maria builds, a ventilated tarp helps prevent moisture buildup while also preventing condensation from trapping.
🔥 Pro Tip from ByGonzo: After deep-cleaning, re-season your cast-iron grates by coating them with a thin layer of high-smoke-point oil (such as grapeseed or avocado) and running the grill at 200 °C (400 °F) for 30 minutes. This creates a durable non-stick surface and extra rust protection.
Keeping your outdoor grill clean doesn’t have to be a chore; it’s a part of the ritual that ensures your equipment—and your weekend cookouts—stay in excellent condition. Follow these tips, and your next barbecue will focus on flavour, not flames.
